I am deep into the work of finally launching my new embroidery kits. This work is so joyful and exciting but has also been challenging and required patience. I can’t wait to share them. In the run up to the launch, I thought I would talk a little bit about why I chose the name “Open Coven”. In 2016, I started a blog about witchcraft and activism. It was a small act of rebellion against a tide of intolerance and hatred that was exposed by the US election. Over time the blog became a creative business into which I poured my rage and frustration. Each design I made was a spell and a call to community. Over time Open Coven went through different phases, to what it is now. I chose the name Open Coven because to me it was both inclusive but also in a sense, discerning. The word “open” to me, meant anyone was welcome, but the word “coven” spoke to those who felt left on the outside by dominant ideas. Magick has and always will be, I think, a fringe endeavor – that’s what attracts me to it. The word “occult”. derives from the latin “occultus” meaning secret or hidden. Coven, is a group, a community but a group that has a spiritual affinity. And so Open Coven manifested my desire for a community of magic makers who care about the world. That ethos is the foundation on which Open Coven is built. Whether it was witchy merch back then or fiber arts now.
