Whether you are experienced at hand sewing or just learning this is a nice project to do over a weekend.
The key to this piece is the variety of yarn widths and colors that create a lovely variety of abstract patterns. If you have lots of scraps of yarn then you are good to go. It’s also important to have a fabric that will be loosely woven enough to allow thicker yarn to pass through without to much pulling – think linens, muslin, even burlap (hessian)
Materials:
- A piece of calico or other lightweight, loose weave fabric.
- Yarn of different colors and thicknesses.
- A darning needle, tapestry, and larger embroidery needle- the eye of the needle needs to be wide enough to accommodate thick yarn and wool of different widths.
- A pencil
- Embroidery hoop of about 5 inches
- Scissors for snipping thread.
- Draw a crescent on your fabric. I use the embroidery hoop as a template. Take the smaller hoop and draw a circle on your fabric. Then move the hoop across so that it intersects part of the circle you drew. Draw around the section of the hoop that is creating a crescent shape in the circle .
- Put your fabric in the embroidery hoop so that it is nice and tight.
- Choose a yarn and use it to sew a patch in your crescent shape – feel free to do a basic stitch such as back or straight stitch. Don’t fill the crescent, just cover a little bit of it. When you are happy with what you have sewn, weave the thread in the back.
- Choose another type and color of yarn or floss and sew another section. You can use a different stitch or continue with the one you started with.
- Keep going until you have filled your crescent.
