Often we think of divination as something to do to know the answer to a question or perhaps (traditionally) to foretell events.
Divination can be used to reveal concealed internal truths and deepen our connection to the divine. The winter solstice is a sweet time to practice divination as we sit in the velvet dark of the longest night.
All you need is a vessel of your choosing that will hold water such as a bowl, saucer or cauldron, a candle, and a small silver coin or charm. I also like to burn incense to create a somatic sense of transformation in a space. You might also want to have a journal with you to make notes.
You can be indoors and outdoors.
Sit in a comfortable position with your vessel of water in front of you. Light your candle and incense if using and ask the divine verbally or silently to share wisdom that will guide you in the coming year.
Here’s something you might like to say “This coin shall be an eye most bright, guiding me with wisdom in the solstice night. As above so below, great divine reveal to me what I should know.”
Drop the coin into the water and relax your gaze on the surface of the water as it settles. Sit like this, breathing deeply with a softened gaze on the coin. To help you focus, you may repeat the incantation above over and over like a mantra.
Do not rush the process and if nothing clearly comes don’t worry sometimes things become apparent after the act.
When you feel ready to end. Express gratitude for this moment. Extinguish the candle and pour the water outside somewhere that you feel drawn to like a plant or tree. Keep the coin/charm separate for other opportunities for divination.
Drink and eat something to ground you.
And rest! Rest is sacred.
