Every year when it comes to the holidays I go out and forage for evergreens and create a wreath. This I wasn’t feeling it, this year I wasn’t feeling a lot of things. I know I am not the only one who is reeling from the one-two punch of a hurricane and the election.
So this year I did something a little different. I found a fake garland that has been knocking about the house for a while with no obvious place to be. Using some gold wire I turned it into a wreath then added some wired-fortified ribbon to give it some glamour.
This time of year as we approach the Winter Solstice there’s a paradox. The solstice marks the longest night of the year, after which the days start to get longer and yet we are at the beginning of winter. And this year we approach the coming of a new regime in the US that is truly scary.
Darkness still has its place. But darkness need not mean hopeless. The winter solstice was historically a time of pause and an opportunity to look inward. To contemplate and plan while the weather was wild outside. When this regime took hold originally in 2016, many of us rushed to organize and protest, march and fight. It made sense because the far right wanted us to hide in the shadows and we refused to bend to this will.
This time around it’s different. I feel it, the panic the permeated the atmosphere of November/December 2016 has been replace in my observations with a resolve to be tactical. To plan and carefully develop the next steps to liberation as well as an examining of the path that has brought us here.
Choosing to do it different is sometimes necessary and who knows, the results may be longer lasting.
